OLPAS - frequently asked questions

What is OLPAS?
OLPAS (Online Pupillage Application System) is a web-based system to allow applications for pupillage to take place online.

When should I apply?
You may apply for pupillage one or two years ahead depending on how close you are to completing the academic stage of training. For example, if you are completing the second or penultimate year of your law degree, or you are about to embark on a conversion course you may apply only to those chambers that offer pupillages two years ahead ie 2007/2008. If you are in your final year of the qualifying law degree or the conversion course you may apply to chambers offering pupillage one or two years ahead ie 2006/2007 or 2007/2008.

Is there a charge for applying through OLPAS?
No, although of course you will need access to a computer with internet access, and to register you must also have an e-mail address through which you can be contacted.

How many chambers can I apply to?
Through OLPAS you are able to apply to 12 chambers per season. As there are two seasons you can apply to a maximum of 24 chambers. You can apply for as many non-OLPAS pupillages as you wish.

Can I apply to the same chambers more than once?
You will only be able to apply for a specific pupillage once per year. A few chambers offer multiple pupillages and in this case it is possible to apply to a chambers more than once (if applying for different pupillages).

What happens once I have applied to chambers?
OLPAS will deliver your application to the relevant provider(s) but we cannot guarantee what happens to it on arrival, as the recruitment process will vary from chambers to chambers.

I have a query about the status of my application?
You will be able to track the status of your applications by logging on to your OLPAS form. Chambers administrators are able to update the OLPAS system to indicate the status of your application, as soon as they do this your application status will be updated online. Should you have a further query about your application you will need to contact the Chambers in question directly.

What are the selection criteria chambers use for pupillage?
Although selection criteria vary from chambers to chambers all chambers in OLPAS adhere to the Equality Code for the Bar.

When do the offers go out?
Please see the 'Timetable' section from the navigation bar for details.

How can I amend my email address?

How will my referee be contacted?
